Career Advisor Meeting One

I met with the Health Profession Career Advisor, Dr. Mildred Rodriguez, on October 3rd to discuss the possibility of my applying to FlexMed and my competitiveness as an applicant. I went into the meeting hoping to get a better idea of whether or not I should apply, and if I were to apply, what I should aim to accomplish this semester.

I would say that the meeting was decently helpful, but I still feel a bit unsure about everything. I learned that Wesleyan has not had someone apply to FlexMed in a while (so they haven’t had someone accepted in a while either), so Dr. Rodriguez is not super familiar with the process. As for my competitiveness as an applicant, the fact that I have a 4.0 is good, and I’m doing a lot extra curricular-wise, but it’s still hard to say whether or not I have a good chance of being accepted due to the fact that every other applicant is quite like me, and I’m not really curing cancer or anything. But I think I’m going to apply anyways, just to shoot my shot (it can’t hurt).

This semester, I know I need to figure out which faculty member I want to do research with (this will likely be an Astronomy professor) and secure that opportunity for next semester and the summer. I’m thinking about reaching out to Professor Wellons because her research involves a good deal of math, which combines both of my interests. Of course I also need to figure out what I’m going to major in (either Math or Astronomy, with CIS). At the point of the meeting, I was leaning towards Math (but, spoiler alert! A November Sofia currently writing this is almost definitely set on Astronomy).

I plan to meet again with Dr. Rodriguez at the end of the semester to discuss my application with her before I submit it in January!
